Periodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the supporting structures located around the teeth which consist of gums, jaw bone, cementum and periodontal ligament which connect and anchor teeth to the jaw bone. A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement of dental implants.
